US customer has a huge advantage to other countries due to the Feds requirement that if a car maker want to sell a car here, they have to release all information and tools to independent shops (for a fee).

The downside of it is that the "fee" is not regulated but up to each manufacturer to decide.
I can understand that too though since the car maker is the one who developed it from the beginning spending the big bucks on tooling.
Kind of what the music and movie industry is going through.

I buy less and less mechanical special tools compared to 10-15 years ago since most mechanical repairs can be done with what I have.
Not much need anymore for tools like the 900 clutch tools or 9000 serpentine belt release tool since many and most mechanical parts are fairly generic.

I'm not a big fan of gadgets and gizmos in cars and if you think about it, what is many of the problems discussed on the newer car boards.

ABS module (electrical issue)
IDM (electrical issue)
TB (electrical issues)
SID
TWICE
Just to name a few of the many electrical or semi electrical things that was barely installed on a late 80s car or in the beginning of 90s where some of those parts worked pretty well.

So I feel as where the amount of electrical things installed have escalated, so has also the drop in quality escalated of those parts (or parts that they are built from).
And where as before, the software maker of a fuel injection computer would have a one shot deal to get it right before mass production, now they don't need to care since they can always come out with a reflash to fix what they didn't get right the first time, ala Microsoft.

I wonder if car makers really want old cars (past 5 years) out on the road or if it would make more sense for them to crush and recycle and sell a new one instead.
