Fairbanks folks just let their cars idle 24/7 when it's below -40°. That's gotta be hell on an engine. Basically, the cheaply made cars do not hold up well. Some of the fancy ones with electronics that Caarma is describing also can't tolerate the thermal shock in their electronic systems. Saab, V*lv*, A*di, M*rc*d*s, etc, all do well, as do many US made cars, trucks & SUV's. I just heard an ad on the radio offering $1200 in gas card usage if you by a new truck or SUV. I think it was for Fords, but may have been GM/Chevy.
