I had many more issues with ignition coils, wires, distributor, rotors and caps than with a single IDM cassete. And those issues were typically much harder to diagnose. Given how relatively low the price of a IDM is these days I would definetely prefer it over the old alternatives.
One thing Saab should do to improve IDM is a small software fix that cuts a fuel pump when IDM reports continious misfires or fails to communicate. Replacing a melted cat is usually much more $$$ than IDM - and cats cannot be sold used either.
