Unintended Acceleration Poll - Lexus and more.. Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Thu, 1 Oct 2009 12:45:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So some of the major causes of unintended acceleration are:
Pedal mis-application (obviously not in the current Lexus case)
Floor mat issues (the likely cause of the current Lexus case)
Electronic gremlins (cruise control, electronic throttle, electromagnetic)
The primary purpose of this post is for you to vote or give your opinion of your favorite cause. What follows is just my commentary.
Back when all this started in 1986 with Audi and 60 Minutes there were only two theories: pedal mis-application and electronic gremlins. Most of the subsequent official research seemed to point to pedal mis-application and hence shift interlocks were required, but shift interlocks haven't seemed to put a dent in the occurrences.
There still seems to be a strong current of electronic gremlin folks who think that some combination of circumstances or electromagnetic fields causes modern cars to go haywire, but like many theories, no one can specifically connect the dots. And now comes the floor mat issue and the Lexus recall.
I 'spose by my "gremlin" reference you can tell how I feel, I don't believe in gremlins, though the visual images are amusing.
This latest Lexus case adds several new issues: Keyless ignition, floor mats, and why the heck he brakes wouldn't stop the car, and can you even shift a Lexus to neutral in a stuck throttle situation?
I'd offer a motorcycle solution, a separate kill switch right on top of the steering column where hazard switches used to reside. I'd also imagine that the issue probably doesn't even fit into the box I've described, we'll see.
