Hundreds of dollars worth of water later the stuck valve was discovered. Maybe a week or two. So the water valve solution is a mixed blessing. Does work when needed though, and can save thousands in basement damage.
On the other hand, a generator gives you power for microwave, light, heat, and maybe some other basics. How many times does this happen to you? If more than once a year, then give it a thought.
We used to have a bunch of willow trees along the power lines. There were only 10 or so of us along the branch of power, and we were the last to be repaired in a blow, and the first to go out. We went out 2-3 times per year, and it would take 2-3 days to get us up again. Pretty crazy.
Fortunately, the neighbor was on a different line, so I bought a 12ga 100' extension cord and made a male/male plug to connect to my garage outlet. I first disconnected the main fuse and ran half the house off of this 120v source. I returned the favor of acting as a power supply when the neighbor was out. It has worked well, and is less cumbersome than a generator.
I'm guessing your options are not so good....
