Lost power for 15 days during the December 2008 ice storm. I have woodstove so keeping the house pretty warm wasn't a problem. My headache was a 500 gallon spa on my back deck. Even though the tub itself is well insulated - that doesn't do a lot of good to help the PVC piping and plastic pumps beneath it. And there is no low point drain on the system. How dumb is that? So after four days I ended up driving 120 miles to find the last generator in New England to keep the pipes/pumps from cracking which would have been a major expense since it would require ripping my deck apart. It was a 5,000 watt generator but I found that that is what the spa's heater is alone! Total over-kill. When combined with a pump running the generator ran for all of 2 minuts before the breaker would trip. So I ended up using the generator to run my furnace & well (hence domestic hot water) and just added about 25 gallons of hot water every morning from a bucket.
