I've thought of this problem too, but have not had misfortune of a flooded basement. I put in a battery operated pump as a backup to the 120V pump and to work when the power is off. I think we are lucky drainage wise and that the battery pump will keep up. Our main pump maybe runs several minutes/hour for a couple of days in the spring. Since we are on a well I also connected things so that when the sump is high (backup pump on) the power to the pump will turn off just in case the problem is due to a plumbing or water tank leak. This was done using the shift interlock from a 96 CS, mounted on the outside of the switch box to flip the switch to off. I got a generator too but more to power the well pump or sewage pump. I guess it might be useful for the sump too but one has to be home.
