Are you looking for a portable genset as referred to below, or do you want the "peace of mind" that a permanent generator provides? As you put it in your opening comments, "It happened in the most inopportune time as usual. I cam home today from overseas to a flooded basement" it would appear you want a "whole house" genset. These are hardwired into the main power supply via an automatic transfer switch that monitors power coming into the house. When a utility company power failure occurs, the unit kicks on automatically and remains on as long as the utility company's power is down. These are great and I have installed quite a few here in New Orleans since Katrina. They are a substantial investment (upwards of $ 7,000.00 or more) but do the job like no other genset system. Are they perfect? No. Will a permanent "whole house" genset pay for itself? Potentially, yes. Will they see you through extended power failures, yes.
Good units come from Generac, Kohler, Norwall, GE, and many others. Please see attached link for a "real world" perspective...
