"However, people don't like to lose for some reason, and will increase their bid incrementally as many times as it takes to get over your bid."
I don't think it's anything to do with losing, but wanting to get it for the lowest possible price.
Other bidders can never increase my maximum price, only the final price that I pay, and only up to my max. But again, if I'm ok with spending $100, I really don't care if a bunch of ebay kiddies bid it up, dollar by dollar to $100. I've decided I'm ok with paying that. If I wasn't interested in paying that, I wouldn't have bid it!
"If you wait until just before the end and put in your bid of $100, you'll probably get it for $75 because no one has a chance to revise their max bid"
Or, you'll come across someone like me who uses an oddball increment above the "even" price, and I win by 32 cents...
If I want something, and I see it, I don't care how many days left, I place my max bid, and let the chips fall where they may.
At ANY Auction, there is likely to be someone who wants something more than you do. The ONLY difference between eBay and its ilk, and a "live" auction, is that the live auction has no stated ending time. It goes until there are no more bids.
If someone wants to pay more than I want, they're welcome to it!
