I understand what you're saying, but tml is right though: in a competitive auction, unless you are willing to pay a lot more than the thing is worth, you are very unlikely to win by setting a max bid early. Sniping is the only way to do it + I don't use a program. Refresh a few times to sync your watch to ebay time. Set your hail mary price, click to confirm your bid in the last second of the auction. You win, you win + often get a fair price. You lose, someone else wanted it more than you + you didn't overpay. Placing any bids early on just drives up the auction, often above the going rate for the item, and the early bidders still usually don't win (except in fairly non-competitive auctions)... at least that has been my experience... sniping is the fairest for all buyers, but not in the best interests of sellers...
