problem is, if the thing sells on average for $75, you overpaid for it. Obviously if you were comfortable paying $200 for it, then $102 still feels like a good deal. What I've noticed is the early bidders seem to like to play a game of "keep my name on top", and on competitive items, those bidders often run up the price significantly beyond the going price (ie if you look at ended auction prices). I've also noticed (even though it is illegal) auctions where it looks like a sellers' "friend" is running up the bids... bidding early can cost you...

An Italian friend who buys and sells extensively on ebay gave me good advice: 1 bid, last second, max you are willing to pay. Sync your watch to ebay time + hit confirm when nobody can beat you. You win, you get the lowest price you could win at. You lose, you didn't overpay. Either way, you don't feel bad. I think I've maybe lost once using that system (and several times prior!).

So it depends on whether your objective is to win at all costs, or to get something at a reasonable price relative to the average. For competitive popular items, my experience is sniping is essential 99% of the time to get the latter result.
