Does it really get you things cheaper? I suppose that may be true, if everyone bids like at a live auction, only just topping the previous bid. But if one is fighting against davidm or myself, who leave larger proxy bids that we're perfectly comfortable paying, are you really getting it cheaper?
BTW, one can usually do the same thing (proxy bid) at a "live" auction. The auctioneer will start the item at a reasonable and not too cheap price (after all, they've already got a bid, taking bids from the floor or phone against the proxy bid. When the proxy bid(s) is exceeded, action goes to the floor/phones.
No matter what, you're winning because you wanted to pay more than the last person who had a valid bid. The timing may enter in to it, but sometimes not. I've a friend who likes to counter-snipe by placing a huge (like double or more) bid in the last seconds when he knows he's fighting a couple snipers bidding dollar by dollar. This can be dangerous, though!
For me, personally, it's not worth the aggravation of either sniping live, or setting up a sniping program for every auction I bid. I certainly don't need everything I bid on, and I've been relieved more than a few times when my max bid has been exceeded!
