As you say, the big decision is determining that max bid. But far better to make that decision in the calm of the early days of an auction than the last seconds. It's too easy to get caught up in the red mist of winning and blow by your personal max on an item in the last seconds.

In flying, the best decisions you make in the air were already made on the ground. You decide if X happens, you do Y, so that in the cockpit, when X happens, and you go white as a sheet, and start to lose control of certain bodily functions, you've already planned your course of action, and you don't have to do the planning AND fly the plane. You just fly the plane. (Ask Capt. Sully...)
