Obviously whatever works for you is great, we may be bidding on different types of things (with different sorts of bidders?) and of course I'm not trying to be critical of you personally (actually I'm very appreciative of your great advice here on Saabnet)...
I got burnt on one of my early auctions by bidding too soon. My bid influenced the other bidder. I ended up paying about the same the second time bidding on the same thing bidding the last second (it cost around $600 + was fairly rare). I had to wait months for one to come up again though, so losing by a couple dollars was not great. This is why I feel sniping works. My bid in the first auction was not really too low, it was too early. The idea is that presenting a good early bid influences other less rational bidders' bids.
I have noticed that many auctions generate interest from idiot (potentially non-paying?) bidders who want to probe + see if they can get their name on top. Sometimes this pushes the price up needlessly. If your bid isn't in, they can't probe it (or stop as soon as their name is on top) and they (or someone else at the last second) may submit a lower bid, so your winning price is lower (ie I don't want to always have to pay close to the maximum I would pay). It's worked that way lots of times in auctions I've won or observed. You and I may set sensible well thought out bids, but not everyone does!
I have lost occasionally to another hail mary last second bidder. Fair enough, they wanted it more than me... so I understand what you're saying - it's just a bit more frustrating if my bid influences them to want it more than me... that's the subtlety of it...
Maybe one of my issues is, coming from Canada + bidding on items in the US, I need to consider shipping costs + problems (eg UPS), so when I find a good auction with a highly rated seller that ships to Canada (+ no UPS), I want to do all I can to win (without overpaying) + not waste time finding another good auction. Probably my bidding approach is not unlike yours, except I wait till the last second (though I agree, it can be annoyingly late at night)... For me though, it's more of a nuisance to lose or overpay on a moderately hard to get item... in a sense, I agree, in principle, when you bid shouldn't matter, but unfortunately in auctions I've observed, more often than not, it does...
I've had good experiences with ebay, though I have to say, there are a lot more commercial sellers on there selling junk these days + it's a lot to wade through + I use it much less nowadays as a result.
