I would tip the trash men $10 each (two of them on a truck) but this year I'm not going to.

Why? Because earlier in the year I bought a certain type of trash can that cost $70 because I was tired of having to go on a 15 minute excursion through the neighborhood looking for my trash cans when I came home from work at night. It was a heavy duty Rubbermaid trash can on wheels. So I use it for 5 or 6 weeks with no problems, it's in the proper place when I get home at night...problem solved.

Well one week I come home and I get a nasty note saying that trash cans can't have flip lids, have to be of a "residential type can", and can't be bigger than 40 gallans (mine was a 50) and that I have been breaking the law and will be fined if I continue to use the can.

I call the township up, the supervisor is a real jerk to me, I point out that people all over town are using the same type cans but he is selectively enforcing the "rules" which aren't published anywhere. He tells me I received the "rules" when I moved to the town 4 years ago (which I never had). We get in a big argument and he hangs up on me because he knows I am right. I was going to go to the town council meeting one month but I never have the time to do so.

So I'm out the $70 for the can (I was about to buy a second one when I got the warning). I ended up giving it to my brother in law because the store where I bought it wouldn't take it back (understandably).

So I see the trash guys a few weeks later, start a discussion with them about it....they say they don't have a problem with it but the supervisor drives around and if he doesn't like something in your trash, type of can, how much trash you have, etc.... he issues the warnings and fines pretty much arbitrarily...which I had accused him of doing.

I tell them since I'm out $70, they aren't getting a tip for the next 4 years. They kind of got pissed at first, but I told them go back and tell their supervisor what I said and get on him about picking on certain people for no apparent reason. They understood after I explained my position. So a couple months go by and they tell me they got into an argument with their supervisor about him pissing people off and that he was on a "power trip" and costing them all money (apparently they pool tips and split them amongst all the sanitation workers). They tell me I can use the can and won't get harassed any more. By this time I had bought two new cans at $40 each that met the "requirements" and given the "non-regulation" can to my brother in law. Too bad I told them, no tip because I was still out the $70.

They apologized for the behavior of their supervisor and said no problem, they understood.
