that's a reasonable rationale + the way it should be imho... feedback for service... that said, many people tip increasingly large amounts for fairly mediocre service... % in some better restaurants can be a big $ figure, though the server is effectively doing the same job as a server at Denny's (though with higher standards ideally expected, of course, + that is worth something, of course, but many times more?)...

on some level, a little more "base pay" and a little more correlation of tip amount to service quality would make more sense (though I'm generally not a fan of increasing minimum wages from an economics perspective)...

I had never heard of someone tipping the garbage man or postman, but I live in Canada... (never mind that we have a garbage man, recycling man, compost man, and sometimes even a yard waste man)... do you tip engineers down there? maybe I should move down south! ;-)
