areas. Their higher gas consumption also means higher road tax income for the localities. Road cleaning being almost a monopoly, over the years, we get less and less road cleaning, while more and more of the road tax disappear into the monopolistic service provider. Forcing people into pickups and SUV's actually raise their road tax income.
Roads being often impassable to low-riding cars was also why before the latest round of boom, most settlements west of I-495 were tightly packed: even a town with only a couple thousand people would have a tightly packed down-town with gas and sewer service. Until the displacement of mom-pop shops in those towns in recent years by big box stores at highway junctions about 10 miles away, many of those small towns could be lived in without even a car in an earlier generation! Hard to imagine nowadays.
