Three of my Stupid Saab Screw-ups

1. I took my ‘86 900T to a mechanic because of difficulty with the clutch. It seemed that the clutch wasn’t disengaging properly which made it very difficult to shift. Got the call from the mechanic that they had diagnosed the problem: the floormat had bunched up under the pedal. At this point, I started learning about car repair on my own :)

2. A fun one was doing my first oil change on my ‘88 900T. As I was pouring in the second quart, I marvelled at the sound of the oil trickling down the filler-tube, and trickling into the engine, when hey, what’s this puddle forming by my feet?!! I had forgotten to put the drain plug back in!

3. My recent screw-up was much more expensive. I was installing my freshly rebuilt transmission into my ‘97 9000Aero, and having trouble getting the tranny to mate up with the engine. I had the bright idea to put in the attaching bolts, and gently tighten them down to pull the tranny onto the engine. The bottom-most bolt (that goes through the oil pan) seemed to get really tight - I thought “oh, just a little tighter, and the tranny will pop right in!†- Well, I did hear a pop, as the corner of my oil pan sheared off. Oil gushed everywhere. I nearly cried. Root cause was that I hadn’t read up thoroughly enough about the need to make a special tool to align the clutch disc on the 9000. Since it doesn’t use a pilot bearing in the flywheel, the standard clutch tool that comes in the kit is severely undersized, and when used, will misalign the clutch disc such that the input shaft has no chance of proper engagement. Tedious lesson!

Happy Saabing!
