1963 VW bug, containing a freshly rebuilt (by me, month old) 1904 motor, dual Weber 44 IDF, dual spring heads, etc. Needed to replace the carb linkage with a better model. Removed engine tins, the head tins and then carb/manifolds as a complete unit, rather than removing the carb from the manifold.
Re-assembled, adjusted, tuned the carbs etc. Drove to work Monday and home. Leaving home for work Tuesday monring, just getting on the highway when I head the most horrific knock coming from the engine. VERY loud, very bad though still running. Start tearing the motor apart that night...
Those who are familiar with air cooled VWs know that there are two 10mm screws that hold the head tin to the head, those two screws are adjacent to each of the intake ports on the head.
One of the tin screws must have worked its way out, was sitting in the depression against the manifold/head junction, and I didnt screw count when R&Ring the engine tins.
That Tuesday the screw finished bouncing around in the intake, and made its way into the cylinder. The screw dimensions, being significantly larger than the TDC gap, didnt fit so well in the combustion chamber. Stainless steel screw hammering against aluminum head and piston = ruined head/piston.
