1) my 72 Datsun
I was doing some random job inside the dashboard and suddenly I felt my wrist burning. I had welded my wristwatch band across the terminals on the back of the ammeter. Lesson #1 disconnect the battery. When I yanked it loose, I discovered all the little meat-hooks under there - sharp bits of steel, etc.
1.5) near-miss with Datsun
Changing the transmission oil. I got the drain plug loose when I paused & decided I'd better FIRST try to loosen the fill plug. No way. Good thing I hadn't drained it...
2) my 74 BMW
I don't remember what I was doing, but I had to reach between runners of the exhaust manifold. I had installed a header, but I was accustomed to a 50pound cast iron manifold. So I had my wife start the engine knowing I could finish before the manifold got hot. WRONG! (scars to prove it)
3) 89 Saab 900
It's real easy to get an oilfilter wrench up against the hot terminal of the alternator. #1 was supposed to have tought me to disconnect the battery... The silly thing is I did that a couple times.
-------------
Another one I'll mention wasn't me; this happened to a friend with a Jetta. His wife went to a friend's shop for an oil change. By the way, check the transmission fluid. OK, manual trans, you're supposed to remove the fill plug & feel for the fluid. DRY. Add a quart. Still dry. Add another quart.
Turns out the guy had removed the plug where you shine a timing light onto the flywheel. He had just poured 2 quarts of gear oil onto the clutch.
--------------
Last one & maybe most expensive...
2010 SOC track day & Nelson Ledges. Shoulda had a baffled oil pan.
