I was rebuilding my first 5-speed transmission in a 1983 base 900. I was using the Haynes manual and following the step by step instructions. I didn't really have a concept of the workings of the transmission. Anyways, I got the transmission rebuilt, bolted it to the engine and dropped it back in the car. I pushed in the clutch and started the car, I was pretty amazed that I hadn't screwed up anything with the wiring or fuel.
I put the car in first gear and started letting out the clutch, but the car didn't move. I pushed the clutch back in and tried it again. The car didn't move. I shifted to second gear and slowly let out the clutch. The car didn't move.
I tried third gear and that worked, the car started to move. I retried first gear, nothing, second, nothing, third okay, fourth okay, fifth okay, reverse okay.
First and second gear didn't do anything. I got the manual back out and went back through the instructions and photos. Now I was starting to understand how everything works in the transmission.
When I pulled the transmission out of the car it was not rebuild-able. I had another transmission to use but I didn't want to install it without rebuilding it first. When I rebuilt the transmission I had the other transmission parts scattered all over my work bench. I had used two of the syncro hubs to hold the shaft in a vice to set the pinion bearing preload. Well it appeared that I had one too many hubs on my bench and one too few in my transmission.
I pulled the engine and stripped the transmission while it was still bolted to the engine, hanging from the engine crane. Sure enough, I had installed everything except the hub between first and second gear.
I didn't share this with anyone for about 5-years. I was pretty embarrassed, but I never screwed up another transmission rebuild.

The photo shows the 2-hubs from the other transmission clamped in the vise.
