This more a tail very bad things done of neglectful, willfull hooliganism than honest mistakes. It was the early seventies, and what can I say. My Triumph was in the shop for what turned out to be six months (a long story in itself) getting the transmission rebuilt and I needed something to drive. I bought a '62 Nova wagon for $75--what a heap. And since it was a short time ride, I didn't bother with registration or insurance--I just took the plates off the Trimph. The drivers side suspension was so bad that if you let go of the steering wheel it would take an immediate left turn. It would wear out the innner two inches of the tire down to the cord in a few weeks, so I would take it in to the gas station and have the tire turned around on the rim to wear the other side down. I bought tires at the junk yard once both side were wore down. There was a coolant leak so I kept gallon jugs water in the car and filled it up when ever it spouted off. I could make it to work on one spout, fill it up and make it home. Some trips were two spout trips, some three. Once some sort of cover (torque converter?) came off of the transmission and started rattling around the drive-shaft. It sound exactly like I was dragging a metal garbage can behind the car--people used to run out of their houses to see what the noise was. It did this for several weeks until one day there was a loud bang and whatever it was came off and I saw it laying in the midddle of the road--I didn't stop. Once the dog got diharia in the car. I got some strange looks when I took it to the quarter car wash and hosed the entire inside of the car out. It didn't hurt anything, it fact it was a vast improvement once it dried. My wife finally drove it too far without coolant and toasted the rings--it started smoking like a locomotive and the battery died. It sat in the drive for a few weeks with three flat tires. Finally I pumped up the tires and I got it running just long enough to trade it in with a car dealer friend of mine. I avoided him for some time after that--he told me later that they never could get it running and they hauled it off to the junk yard. I eventially did clean up my act but I did learn just how little you can do to car and have it keep running.
