is that the skillet, the shoes, and even the brand new Saab are all attainable in the society that enjoys the virtuous cycles of division of labor through mutually willing exchanges.
Free market exchanges are naturally accretive: each participant is receiving something of value that is exceeding what he/she is giving up; that includes charitable givings where the giver derive more value in seeing the well being of a less fortunate recipient. In that case, there's no need for the gaggles of tax accountants, tax lawyers, the tax enforcers, law-makers and lobbyists to get between the giver and the recipient . . . all the intermediaries that make the whole process less efficient and less pleasant.
The strong arms of the government tend to produce vicious cycles of mutual predation. Americans (and Canadians) have been able to enjoy a more civil and genteel society precisely because our society tended to let individuals interact with each other peaceably without an armed third party the bureaucrat sitting at the table too at every turn. That third party definitely do not work for free.
