just like carmaking was, when the companies took their own chances to earn customers. They provided a valuable service to the economy/society, with real competition making sure they go about their businesses efficiently. The worst thing can happen to an industry is government take-over of the industry. Even entering under the guise of "sponsorship" would quickly unbalance the competitive landscape and turn the industry into an unproductive/counterproductive bureaucracy. It's the same reason why all the Soviet and Japanese government sponsorship of their computer industries went nowhere, whereas the competitive landscape in the US commanded by individual consumers produced the result that has enabled a new industrial revolution.
