we've had this discussion before, and I think the trouble with your argument is there is always "less". If one always says "I want less" one is actually only happy with none at all. But I recognize your desire for a placeholder government as a minimum...
Personally, I like having a government (we have 3 levels really) that values a bundle of services that are not terribly well delivered otherwise. I know we have debated + you seem to like the idea of privately run stuff others might not (eg garbage, education, health), but that aside... it would be nice to see that bundle of services delivered as efficiently as possible. It never seems to be perfect, and there is certainly waste to cut. If the populace demands *that*, then there is a better chance of it happening... but a placeholder government (that doesn't deliver any services) holds little appeal to me.
As you say, Canada + the US have had relatively good freedom, prosperity etc in recent decades... in spite of your anti-Keynes diatribe, we've seen some of what I'd refer to as good Keynesian policy here in the decade leading up to this recession that is partly what is responsible for us riding it out pretty well (though obviously the strong resource sector doesn't hurt!)... ironically, some of the recent spending up here in the name of Keynes has been of what I would refer to as the bad sort (eg money thrown at GM), but there are complexities associated with explaining the intricacies of this which will get me another "error 27!!!" ;-)... there is much irony in it wrt to what you are saying though...
one thing I hadn't realized until recently is that we have significantly lower corporate taxes than the US... yet we are looked at by those down south as an over-taxed overly-social society... not really. it's a pretty good balance imho, and lots of people up here are pretty happy with it!
these are interesting times economically!
James...
