While I have no idea how much of China's most recent "economic growth" is real (vs. governmental statistical scams), one thing is quite certain: the Chinese and Indian automotive industry is a bonanza. More new drivers get licenses each year in China and India than probably the entire population of Sweden! and they don't have a used car market to satisfy that demand. Unlike ours where most car purchases are satisfied by used cars, their entire three-year used car fleet is less than one half of the current year production (consequence of double-digit growth each year). So obviously, if Volvo and Saab want to continue to make cars, it only makes sense for them to go to where the customers are. Audi has been making and selling more cars over there than in the US for more than two decades now.
From Saab and Mueller's perspective, it goes beyond money and marketing potential. Having a second major source of financial banking so that the company is not solely dependent on Antonov is a good thing.
