I used to work for RS back in the late 90’s and I loved it. My dad managed one back in the 70’s when they had a “lifetime speaker guarantee”. Of course I’ve always been into electronics since I was 5 years old so it was a perfect job for me back when I was in college. Back then they still had the resistors, capacitors, every type of RF adapter you could dream of; in fact the back half of the store was nothing but “parts”. The only name-brand thing in the store was Sony at the time. And they discouraged selling anything Sony because the profit margin was so low. They pushed the RS branded things, which were just re-labeled name brands anyway. I remember looking up in the computer what the company cost for an item was compared to the retail cost – most of the markups were 100-150%! The store I worked at was so slow, I believe we were the lowest volume store in our district but our location put us in a good population center with the closest major retail stores at least 30 minutes away. As far as I know the store is still there today.

I used to work Sundays by myself from 12-5 and business was usually slow so spent most of the time arranging the electronic parts in the back of the store! I was such an electronics geek! Always got yelled at for not upselling but how many batteries, adapters, cords, etc does the customer needed! One thing they never did was include batteries, even when buying a TV with a remote, you as the sales clerk was supposed to “upsell” the batteries. I never did, tore the bar code off and would give them to the customer and write it off as “store stock”. But back then you did have to understand everything in the store including the electronic parts and take tests to prove it.
