I agree about the usefulness of robotics in situations like this...
One cool factory setup/case study is Linn. For those not aware, Linn makes premium hifi in Scotland. One of the premises of the manufacturing there is to emphasize attention to detail by passing significant responsibility for quality on to the assemblers (eg RMAs go back to the person who built it). I've used this approach in low volume high tech manufacturing also, and the assemblers respond well + develop a greater sense of pride in their work - it works (for the right product)!
Anyway, they try not to have humans do low skill jobs, so, for a couple decades now, they've had a computerized, automated parts delivery system in the factory... sounds like a crazy idea for such a small factory, but it helps the workers focus on the high skill work...
oh, and afaik they're not unionized... well run companies with happy employees don't need unions...
(none of this is to say that Linn is perfect, or that most industry could operate the same way, but there are some good ideas there, imho)
