I do not intend to offend, but this article has a pretty classic stereotyped tone (used to be Chaz, you nailed it with Upton Sinclair, but don't forget he ran for office on the Socialist ticket; I don't think you can consider him an objective reporter of events).
The main assumption in the article is implying that profit is evil and benefits only the wealthy shareholders; those shareholders now include millions of middle class folks investing in a 401K, a mutual fund, etc.
There is no perfect system, but only the market can ultimately allocate resources efficiently. As soon as it is distorted, someone will step in and do a better job, these days that means an emerging nation. And yes, ours has been severely distorted both at the union and corporate level. There's nothing wrong with everyone trying to make out the best they can, so one can't really blame either group, but we can blame ourselves for re-electing folks who make the laws that lead to these distortions. I doubt many people can disagree that it has decimated once proud cities and regions of our country.
