I read some Ayn Rand ages ago... she's a bit too much for me...
So I guess, I'm not trying to say that people shouldn't be allowed to join unions or that they are always a bad thing... salary etc is negotiable, and I suppose it is fair enough to do that negotiation in bulk... I guess what I meant was that in many cases, the supposed benefits of unions are either moot (eg high tech, we're generally well paid because things are relatively profitable) or actually a downside to economic productivity (salaries are kept artificially high for the people who keep their jobs but jobs are lost + less gets done for the same cost... or perhaps a business becomes unprofitable, eg with unrealistic/undervalued pension commitments etc, and has to downsize or fold). I basically look at it from an economics 101 standpoint, which is that unions (or raising a minimum wage) provide an economic drag and feed inflation. Not great imho...
In a climate of desperate people who can't switch jobs, sure a union can somewhat protect them from being grossly taken advantage of, but the same economic commentary holds, and it might be wise for such employees to work towards career change even with union protection, imho... it indicates an unhealthy industry and or company... a job interview is 2 sided: you are interviewing the company also...
anyway, that's the way I look at it...
James...
