Out of the four candidates that I mentioned, I too think BMW fits the best. The word that I'm thinking is "complementary."
BMW has a FWD platform almost ready for introduction; rumor has it in the 3-series size-wise . . . seems to be a perfect candidate for marketing under Saab brand. It would be a great way to increase volume and satisfying fuel consumption regulations without diluting BMW brand equity or alienating the BMW fandom and "trend setters" who really do care about the RWD tradition (and I-6 engines). Saab is a great brand for selling premium practical cars at volume (FWD, turbo-4; Saab pioneered the field). I agree that if Saab gets to use the BMW parts bin, and especially if the existing dealers can be convinced to agree to letting BMW dealers who do not have any Saab dealers within 75 miles also sell Saabs just like they sell Mini's at BMW dealerships, reaching 300-400k units in 4 years will be a cake walk. BMW's own goal of reaching 2million units corporate-wide will be achieved very much ahead of schedule without diluting BMW's own brand equity and RWD heritage. Having a Saab brand to compete with Audi FWD cars in the entry-luxury and snow belt family car market segment, BMW will be in a much better position maintaining profit margin on its own branded cars.
