Back then the 533i/733i and 535i/735i had 3.2L and 3.4L naturally aspirited Big-6 engines respectively. A turbo charger was strapped onto the base NA engine to turn out 745i of the 1980's, on the market for a very brief time as a stop-gap measure before another stop-gap measure the V12 750i conjoining two Small-6 2.5L engines together, both intended for small volume specialty models. Eventually BMW put together enough money to do a proper V8 for volume production, largely due to competitive pressure from the Lexus entry into the market segment. Those were the days.
