Whup-assed on Toyota and everyone else, sold somewhere on the order of 9 million cars in the last year. Pretty good for a "zombie company." Personally I can't think of a company that more richly deserved to go belly up. Are they nice guys? No. Did they do the right thing with Saab? Certainly not. Is having the government bail out private companies out a good idea? Hell no. But the salient point is that GM represented on the order of a million and a half jobs (and yes the exact number can be debated) at a time this country just plain could't afford to lose that many. And can you imagine the psychological impact of every town in the country having boarded up GM and Chrysler dealerships on their business row? Put aside the rhetoric, politics, and philosophy for two seconds and ask yourself if the nation would really be better off if that scenario had come to pass? We have a bunch of candidates all telling how they are going to create jobs and yet everyone of them would have let the car companies go under as a matter of "policy." And I find that pretty ironic considering it was the previous administration that did the really big bailing out. We had 8 years of free-market/capitalism or die guys running the show and then when things got tough they embraced socialism. So which is it? Helping the car companies was the lesser of two evils at best. But sometime life is like that, it's rarely black and white and I'm thankful that both the previous administration and the current one had the good sense to realize it.
