In the early to mid-90's, most people thought SLR was a dying business. Nikon introduced a professional camera like F4 or F5 only once every 8 yrs or so, and it sold for "only" $2500 or so. That means the typical small studio photographer with $100k a year revenue (there were hundreds of thousands of them; $100k business revenue not profit, which would be much lower after costs) was generating $500 or so a year for Nikon bodies. At the same time, each of them were going through $10,000 a year on Kodak film and chemical. Little wonder Nikon was in dire straits while Kodak was raking in the cash.
The moment I saw some of the first digital cameras and getting reports that people were shelling out $30k for those bodies (comparable or better film bodies were selling for $2k, not a typo, $2k not $20k), that's what motivated me to dig around for what the cash flow situation was like in a typical photography business and I came to the realization that the camera body was going to be the new film in digital photography. i.e. Kodak would be doomed if they can not recapture that $10k a year cash flow from the hundreds of thousands of photographers.
That's why I put together a report for why Kodak should offer Mitsubishi on Nikon at a price "too good to refuse," taking advantage of Mitsubishi's dire financial condition in the mid-90's. Unfortunately Kodak internal numbers guys were too well trained in linear thinking extrapolate the recent past, could only calculate present cash value for Nikon based on its previous trickle of cash flow in film days, not realizing what was about to hit the industry.
