Reading through these posts, I can't help but think about Nortel. It was a big employer here + of course, now it's gone... yet I don't see vast numbers of unemployed wireless/optoelectronics engineers around here... many got absorbed into startups or created them... so I do agree with you to some extent...
on one hand, Nortel could have been given a "too big to fail" designation like GM... certainly many jobs were lost + there was actually some really good work done there + facilities were top notch (some of which needs economies of scale)... but it's probably for the better to have engineers working on new up + coming tech... that situation is a little different than kodak, as it is more related to a bubble than being completely out of date technology-wise, but similarities exist...
One thing that is a bit of a shame in all this liquidation + writeoffs, is the amount of stuff that has some value that just gets tossed in the dumpster to protect IP or whatnot... there definitely is loss of hard value in addition to write downs of bad debts/fake value...
