where the topic was how Asian and domestic cars have in many ways caught up to European makes. The difference is often now more of feel and style than of performance and build quality.
Companies like Hyundai and Kia will be fighting the bottom-feeder image for years, no matter how good their new models may be. And there are lots of people with needy egos who feel these brands are beneath them, or will hurt their self-esteem. I wonder how those folks deal with the fact that lots of people think Saab owners are certified wing nuts.
I've read that Hyundai considered having the Genesis and Equus models be part of a separate brand (like Acura, Infiniti, Lexus) instead of just wearing Hyundai badges. They decided the Hyundai label would do the job and be a far more cost-effective way to bring the higher line cars to market. It's never been done successfully by any car maker--going from cheap to high-end--but I guess they figured it's worth a shot if they can deliver decent quality products.
What I haven't figured out is where Hyundai/KIA are cutting costs. Labor? Materials? Lots of places? Haven't looked at them closely enough to find out.
