My previous understanding was that KIAs were the cheap version of Hyundais, kind of like Chevy/Pontiac, but they seem to have blurred that. I think that with some foresight they could have set up a Toyota/Lexus, VW/Audi, Nissan/Infinity, etc. kind of relationship. The car makers love their luxury brands, typically make much more per unit on them. And it's not unheard of to have a luxury or performance car with the cheap car label, as in the Chevy Corvette.
So, where are they cutting costs? Labor costs in Korea is much lower than labor in Japan, however with many of the Asian brands being made in the US, this doesn't hold up. In the past, Hyundai bought last-gen engines from Mitsubishi, but I don't think that they do that any more.
