I haven't driven one and I know it's underpowered, but for what it's meant to be it's probably fine. It competes with a Civic, not a turbo Saab.
The other day with I talked to a guy and his wife with Veloster as they were loading it up with stuff at WallyWorld. Decent hatch size, too. They were pretty pleased and getting 40 mpg or so.
IMHO, some folks here need to lighten up about Hyundai and KIA. They are meant to be mainstream cars, and they are putting in turbo-motors and even the stock Sonata and Optima have about 200 HP.
I put a few hundred miles on a new Sonata in Cali last June and was surprised to find I liked it, despite the steeply raked windshield and big A-pillar. I had it on some steep switchbacked roads and while it's no canyon-carver in stock trim it did OK. More fun to drive than a Camry or Altima, both of which I've rented lately.
Sure, I like my 9K with the Stage 1 ECU, Aero chassis, and SAS bars better, and my wife's 9-5 wagon, too, but for the money the Sonata is OK. It would benefit from a stiffer rear sway bar, some performance tires, some better shocks/struts, and firmer seats. But then most of us do all that stuff to our Saabs. (And we are spoiled by Saab seats.)
And 3-4 years ago I drove the last generation Sonata back-to-back with a Volvo S40, and liked the Sonata much better--much to the surprise of my Euro-car preferenced brain.
Back in the late '80s I ran part of Hyundai's customer satisfaction program. And they were total crapboxes. But the company has kept at it and they build decent cars today. Whether they can do 200K miles or not --and what level of care is needed to make them really last-- is all TBD. It's good to remember that much as we love them (I've had 6, with 4 currently) Saabs are not perfect and we DO spend a fair bit of time fiddling with them to get the big numbers to show up on the odometer.
Just sayin'...
