This will liven up the board I'm sure... though I could probably just supply a link to the last one of these threads...
I think it really depends on what you want to do with it. Since you are looking at laptops, the differences in hardware are much less significant than desktops or whatnot. It really comes down to what OS you prefer + if you care about using existing software or not, and then what software you prefer.
So, that said, I would suggest trying out OSX and if you're not on Windoze7, try to play with it some also. 7 does offer a better user experience than Vista.
Personally, as an engineering type, I find PC's much more useful for what I do than Macs. But I like things that are fairly open + repairable + modifiable. To equate it to cars, I'm ok with DIY repairs, finding my own parts, used parts, etc etc... Not to say Macs can't be used like that, but really Macs are meant to go with a "dealer experience"... things are taken care of for you (at higher cost). So depends what you are looking for.
But like I said, these differences are much less pronounced with laptops. If you get a PC, definitely look to one of the better brands and do your research (and not just based on advertising - look for real life opinions, NewEgg reviews are a good place to start). My Toshiba has been basically rock solid for about 4 years now. I wouldn't touch a Dell.
good luck!
