I wish our society valued "built to last" more. It may be a chicken or the egg thing a bit - is it customers mindlessly following the marketing efforts of industry, or business following customer demand? but one way or another, many products are built around style first and almost intentionally built not to last so we will buy more. For most (it would seem), "new" is better than "good".
I personally do mainly try to buy things that are built to last... it is traditionally a Scandinavian value and probably one reason I was drawn to Saab... I still own 2 c900s and they are nowhere near "done"... I avoid furniture with veneers, particleboard, mdf, etc... I try to buy only as little technology as I need, because most of it is disposable... I'm even ok with being a bit of a luddite (as engineers go) as a result... and it means I sometimes find great deals on some really nice used stuff that our flaky society casts off for something "new" (but less well built)...
Why would Apple build their computers to last more than 3 years if their customer base amortizes them over that time frame? It costs more to build to last, which would hurt them in the market. They are making way more $$ selling pads, pods, and phones (and content for them)... It is also why, when people hold Apple up as a paragon of quality manufacturing that I say, "well, they are ok for what they are building, but there are much better examples of high quality manufacturing"...
All this is to say that I largely agree with Zig's commentary. I'll stop ranting.
