It is cold here today and the combination of too much day-dreaming of Viggen fun next summer, coupled with reading one too many journalistic worship pieces dedicated to the C7 Corvette, caused my calculator fingers to start itching.
The Viggen engine develops 230 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque from 2.3 liters of displacement. On a unitary basis this equates to 100 HP and 113 lb-ft or torque per liter.
The C7 engine develops 450 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque from 6.2 liters of displacement. These equate to 72.6 HP and 72.6 lb-ft of torque per liter.
So the 14 year old Viggen engine produces 38 percent more horsepower and 56% more torque per liter than the heavily lauded new engine in the C7 'Vette!
I won't ignore that the Viggen is turbocharged with 20 pounds of boost, but GM assigned a design team for two years to develop a new combustion chamber shape for the C7 engine, and there is a 14 year difference in technology and development tools between these engines. These last two facts should negate some of the forced induction difference.
Viggen for the win!
