All the of the Ecotec ll engines had accessories mounted to the block. Along with variable valve timing and tweaks to the turbo like twin scroll manifold. I am sure there are others if you read up on the articles. The engine is very smooth and can produced more power than B235 with changing the insides. Dyno graphs of stock turbo Regal GS 2.0T carry torque higher and longer than Saab 2.8T in similar configuration. The 2.8T needs an upgraded turbo to match the 2.0T in torque at higher rpms.
I have the iron block in my Encore and noise reminds me of the iron block Saab. Something that is missing in both 2.0T and 2.4 Ecotecs.
