It's the new Macbook (12", retina screen) that only has a single port (USB C) for everything, including power. The Airs have two USB 3 ports and a Thunderbolt 2, and the 13" adds an SDXC reader, but don't offer a retina display.
Ditto the advice about discipline factoring heavily into platform choice (business pretty heavily Windows, arts and humanities almost universally Mac, others mixed), although a majority of our undergrads now have Macs. Also ditto the fix everything warranty - the way most students treat their laptops is appalling. Theft coverage is also important, I see students leaving unsecured laptops in the library for an hour while they go to lunch! If I had a son or daughter going to school, I'd invest in an online backup solution and set it up automatically. It's not just loss or damage, many students don't practice good online hygiene and the only way to recover is to blow the system image, along with all the data.
FWIT, I was a committed Windows user until 18 months ago, when I switched to a 13" Air, which at that time had the longest battery life of anything. I really like it, although I am running Parallels for some Windows-specific software.
