I would check with the department what they use. Most sciences do some lab work that may involve computers in a greater context than just word processing and spread sheets... eg interfacing to experiments. If the students are expected to use their laptops for that, there could be risks of incompatibility. Otherwise, you are probably fine... but I would check with the department, as it really depends on how they do stuff. Even in engineering a Mac may be ok if the school predominantly uses desktop solutions in class.
Mac and PC have substantially converged anyway. There really is not much difference in terms of hardware aside from aesthetics, and Mac's are not made in any special way with any greater care than PC's (production is outsourced to OEMs in China). There are PCs with equal or superior build quality. The main difference is the OS, and that is where one should be carefully considering their decision based on preferences and intended usage.
