Wife's 9-5 wagon was totaled a few years ago. We picked up a used Volvo XC90 which was 2 yrs newer and had <80k miles. It was a disaster to own and after two years, unloaded it. Ultimately, we capitulated and got a new Toyota Highlander. It really is a great car.

Outside of the orphan brands, the used car market is pretty efficient. Unless you want to buy something that is far out of favor with the masses or something you can wrench yourself, you're going to have to pay to have something worthwhile or with longevity.

I think used chevrolet/buick cars are pretty good in terms of maximum depreciation vs reasonable reliability. SUVs will all be over priced.

Avoid:
Anything with a CVT transmission
Any VAG product >5 years old
