I'll 2nd the mazda 6, especially now that they put a turbo in it. Could be a decent lease rate.
You had mentioned a bmw wagon being tight. I ended up with a BMW 328 GT, hatchback. It is surprisingly bigger than the sedan or wagon, has great storage and huge backseat. Really nice driving car, and not that popular, thus some good used deals to be had.
I've had my 2015 for 9 months, and no issues. I did go with an extended warranty as I'm in unfamiliar territory with this car, but driving is fun again! Just wish it was manual.
The highlander will likely be pretty bulletproof, just not very engaging, and not exactly cheap.
Good luck with the search.
Adam
