Mind you that modern diesel propelled produce about 35% less CO2 per mile than gas propelled cars!! So that's one of many reasons why most technological R&D goes into diesel engines in Europe today. Diesel engines are much more fuel efficient than gas engines.
And slow???? No way. New diesel cars like BMW, Citroen Volkswagen and fortunately Saab are quick movers. Top speeds of well over 125 mph are no problem.
Japan is still quite a bit behind in this technology. But even Honda is investing tons of money in diesel technology right now. It proves there's definitely a future.
American cars would sell better in Europe if they were lighter and more fuel effcicient. Some of them are on their way with the help of Euro suppliers. Chrysler is the only successful " direct from the US" car seller also because of diesel technology put into the Voyager and Jeep (Grand) Cherokee. Ford (Windstar, Mustang etc.) and GM (Chevy) are doing quite a bad job here by only selling big and heavy.

About CO2 we can only guess the consequences. Scientists are so contradictory on this point. But let's face it: cleaner air is always better. And the time is right to start thinking about things like this instead of sticking our heads in the sand.
All site users already made a good move by driving an environment concious car like Saab. Best of all it's a great car too. So the best of two worlds.
