The VW TDI diesels, fitted in VW and Audi and other makes, uses a catalytic converter to burn off soot. And high sulfer in fuel can elevate its 'light off' temperature which delays how soon it starts working. As diesels are almost always exhausting excess O2, there is no O2 sensor, and a NO catalytic conversion is not possible. NO emissions are reduced by fuel injector timing.
