I am a Boston resident, however my family has owned a house in Maine for the last 50 years and I have been there every summer of my life. We are situated in Georgetown, Maine. It's what you would call midcoast Maine, between the cities of Bath and Boothbay. There are miles of beautiful beaches at Reid State Park, a mere 2 miles up the road from Five Islands, where our house is. The Five Islands Lobster Co. is often named the best place to eat lobster in the state by Down East magazine, and the Governor of Maine owns a house on Indian Point, also on Georgetown Island. There is fine dining at the Meetinghouse and Osprey restaurants near the ritzy Robinhood marina. I have also visited Acadia Nat'l Park on Mount Desert Island numerous times, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. With regard to Dr. Eric Strauss' post mentioning the Asticou Inn, I personally stayed in a house about 1/4 of a mile from there, and the Northeast and Seal Harbor areas are very beautiful, if populated by some true blue bloods (to put it this way, a friend of mine who has a house there lives next to the Rockefellers). I'm very biased, being a Maine vacationer all my life, but it has everything, mountains, ocean, shopping, culture, cities, desolate backwoods, and, of course, the best lobster in the world.
