is a stretch of road you'll never forget. You start to climb, then the road starts to get twisty. The climb gets steeper, and then you start to hit switchbacks. The canyon-like terrain feels like the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, without the redwood trees.
After a particularly steep section, you'll summit the Appalachian Gap having climed ~1,200 vertical feet in 3 miles. You can pull off into a parking area to do some sightseeing or hike some of the Long Trail, which runs from Canada to Massachussets along the spine of the Green Mtns.
Going down the other side, you'll descend for a while, and eventually you'll zip around yet another hairpin turn and find yourself facing the TOP of a chairlift. A few minutes later, and you drive right through the base area of Mad River Glen ski area. Stop and grab a pint of Magic Hat "Single Chair" Ale at the "Basebox" and enjoy the time-capsule feel of a ski hill without condos, hotels, and all of the other commercial crap you see on most access roads.
A few miles further down 17, and you're in Waitsfield. Hang a left, and the Ben and Jerry's factory is 15 miles up VT rt.100.
The photo below was taken in January, near the top of a trail called "Paradise"- you can see Rt. 17 clearly in the background.
